Swimming Against Cancer

The sun poked through the clouds for Swim Across America's Swim for a Cure event at the Vista Hermosa Sports Park San Clemente Aquatics Center on Sunday morning. 

Founded in 1985, the nonprofit organization Swim Across America raises money and awareness for cancer-related research, treatments and prevention through swim events and with the help of volunteers across the nation.

 "Everyone we've come in contact with has lost someone to cancer," said local swim and coach legend Byron Reidenbaugh. "It's very important that people are coming to contribute to this cause."

The Crown Valley Divers, the 2011 Amateur Athletic Union National Champion dive team, showcased their skills Sunday. Relay races featured traditional swimming with freestyle and butterfly strokes, along with playful races including floatation devices.

"The quicker we can cure this disease, the better," said Co-Event Organizer and Coach for Swim for a Cure Barbara Helton. "The intent of the day is to have fun with the kids while raising awareness."

The Swim for a Cure raised over $13,000 for the day, which is more than half of their aspired goal of $25,000.

 "I can't believe how many people I know that are either battling or overcoming cancer," said volunteer Frank Bassett. "The best thing I can do is encourage people to fight the good fight to overcome this evil."
