Even though the pandemic put in-person events on pause, this did not stop UCI Beall Applied Innovation’s Events and Audio Visual (AV)/Information Technology (IT) teams from helping the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center (CFCCC) in their efforts to re-designate as a comprehensive cancer center from the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
The NCI is the federal government’s primary agency for cancer research and training. Through the comprehensive cancer center designation, 51 centers are national leaders that meet the NCI’s rigorous criteria of state-of-the-art research that focuses on developing new and better approaches to cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. CFCCC was first designated in 1994 and has received the comprehensive designation since 1997. They are once again pursuing the prestigious title.
Applied Innovation’s Events and AV/IT teams provided the CFCCC a platform and the latest technology in a safe and clean space up to state and University of California standards to help make the Cancer Center’s process possible.
“The Beall Applied Innovation event and audiovisual teams provided excellent assistance and service as the CFCCC prepared for the critical NCI comprehensive designation,” said Christine Hui, chief administrative officer and associate director of Administration and Finance at the CFCCC. “They were readily available for all dress rehearsals and were very customer-service oriented to the needs of this important event.”
The re-designation was held at the Cove @ UCI, Applied Innovation’s 100,000-plus-square-foot facility that serves as their headquarters and is outfitted with the latest technology that can accommodate not only large in-person events, but now also all manner of hybrid and virtual events. This includes managed webinars, hybrid events and managed livestreaming, which offers the ability to extend the reach of the program by engaging with virtual speakers and audiences.
“The Cove is a special place where innovating and thinking outside the box are celebrated; and our team was certainly up to the challenge,” said Kate Bergin, events and tradeshow specialist at Applied Innovation. “As we shifted to remote work, we quickly focused our efforts on developing new services to meet the evolving needs of our clients. Considering all of the wonderful technologies outfitted throughout the Cove, we always intended to include virtual events, but the pandemic’s new virtual environment gave us the motivation to fast forward our plans.”

To accommodate for the different virtual systems and to expand the Cove’s virtual offerings, Applied Innovation’s AV/IT team created a “livestream in a box,” which allows the team to conduct pre-recorded, high-quality video sessions in addition to seamlessly switching between the live sessions and pre-recorded videos.
“It is our job to not only create high-quality meetings, but also make sure we had awesome audio and camera equipment to meet the client’s expectations. We wanted to make sure we had figured out all the kinks in advance so we were more prepared and the client would feel more comfortable,” said Josh Kaiser, AV/IT analyst at Applied Innovation. “Being able to give someone an answer right off the bat is the best thing you can do to help the client feel more appreciated, understood and taken care of — that’s our first job.”
