Irvine, Calif., May 8, 2018 – University of California, Irvine (UCI) Applied Innovation, a UCI department that connects campus-based discoveries with the business community to support regional economic development, will feature the latest UCI intellectual property as well as four faculty members, seven scientific posters and UCI’s top available technologies at TechConnect World 2018 Conference & Expo May 14 -16 in Anaheim, California.

“As a world-class research university, ingenuity, research and inventions leading to life-changing discoveries takes place at UCI,” said Richard Sudek, UCI’s chief innovation officer and executive director of UCI Applied Innovation. “TechConnect is an ideal platform to showcase these discoveries with the business community, form unique partnerships and accelerate innovation and regional economic vitality.”
TechConnect World Conference & Expo connects top applied research and early-stage innovations from universities, labs and startup businesses with industry leaders.
The top available UCI technology presented at TechConnect World 2018 will cover a broad range of biological and life science specialties, nanotechnologies and engineering materials.
Monday, May 14, Mohammad Al Faruque, professor of electrical engineering and computer science, Ph.D., computer science and engineering, will feature several encryption and cybersecurity-based technologies between moving objects and across long distances such as “Secret Key Generation for Wireless Communication in Cyber-Physical Automotive Systems,”
“A Physical Layer Security Key Generation Technique for Inter-Vehicular Visible Light Communication,” and “Physical Layer Cryptographic Key Generation Utilizing PMD to Secure Optical Fiber Link.” Faruque’s current research focuses on Internet-of-Things system-level design, embedded systems and cyber-physical systems. Additionally, Shane Ardo, professor of chemistry, Ph.D., inorganic chemistry, will feature his energy generation invention “Devices for Integrated Solar Photodialysis of Salt Water,” which removes salt from water through currents produced by sunlight.
Tuesday, May 15, Yun Wang, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, Ph.D., mechanical engineering, will feature “Energy Harvester from Breath-Associated Belly Movement,” which converts energy created by the human body to energy that can continuously power cell phones and wearable devices. Additionally, Reginald Penner, professor of chemistry, Ph.D., chemistry, will be available to discuss his two different inventions, “Enhanced Cycle Lifetime with Gel Electrolyte for Mn02 Nanowire Capacitors,” a new method of nanowire battery technology for computers, smart phones, cars, and spacecraft, as well as “Process For Electrodepositing Manganese Oxide With Improved Rate Capabilities For Electrical Energy Storage,” which is a new way to enhance lithium ion batteries.
UCI faculty researchers will also present the following posters at separate sessions:
• Wang, Y. Portable Energy Harvesters for Electronic Devices. • Wang, Y. Advanced Film Thermal Protectors for Electronic Devices. • Wang, Y. PEM fuel cells of small gas flow channels: two-phase flow. • Jiang, S. Integration of microfluidic chip with Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) assay for rapid quantification of Enterococcus Faecalis. • Gorodetsky, A. Adaptive infrared-reflecting systems inspired by cephalopods. • Gorodetsky, A. Reflectin as a Material for Neural Stem Cell Growth. • Digman, M. Fluorescence Lifetime Trajectory of the Mouse Pre-Implantation Embryopredicts its Viability.
Wednesday, May 16, Natalie Nodianos, industry contract officer, UCI Applied Innovation, will be featured on the panel “IP & Data Rights: What You Need to Know” at 10:00 a.m. Bill Waldo, senior consultant, Small Business Development Center at UCI Applied Innovation, will be speaking on the panel “Making the Sales Pitch: Insights Around Pitching Your Business Plan” at 11:00 a.m.
Additionally, several UCI faculty members will be featured as key speakers to discuss micro and bio fluidics during symposium sessions starting May 14-15. Marc Madou, UCI professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, Ph.D., semi-conductor electrochemistry, will open the symposium on Monday, May 14 to discuss compact disc-microfluidics for extreme point of care. On Tuesday, May 15, Abraham Lee, UCI professor of biomedical engineering, Ph.D. mechanical engineering, will discuss microfluidic regulated homeostasis.
UCI Applied Innovation will join University of California, Los Angeles Technology Development Group, University of California, Riverside and University of California, Santa Barbara in the UC Pavilion at booth 501 throughout the conference duration.
