Kelly Carlson, industry research and material transfer officer at UCI Beall Applied Innovation, received the Golden Stopwatch Award from Addgene for her excellent turnaround time with Material Transfer Agreements (MTA). The award recognizes technology transfer offices that quickly process material requests in less than two days and one week for material deposits. Carlson is the first within the UC system to receive this award. “Thank you to Addgene for this special honor,” said Carlson. “What a pleasant surprise! I am grateful for the recognition I have received for my work. Especially now, good surprises are always welcomed and greatly appreciated.” An MTA is a legally enforceable contract used by research institutions and companies to set terms under which their materials and associated data may be obtained and used by others. These materials and data are often the essential starting point for many high-impact projects across campus. Addgene is a nonprofit plasmid repository that stores and distributes high-quality plasmids, or a genetic structure in a cell that is used in laboratory manipulation of genes. “As UC Irvine’s research enterprise continues its record growth, the need for source materials and third-party requests to leverage UCI innovation has exploded,” said David Gibbons, director of Industry Sponsored Research at Applied Innovation. “The only way a campus can keep up with these demands is with dedicated and expert staff like Kelly. We’re very proud of the recognition she has received, as it is well deserved.” In 2015 Carlson joined Applied Innovation where she currently works with the campus to put agreements in place to send and/or receive research material between UC Irvine and academic, nonprofit or industrial institutions. Prior to UCI, Carlson worked at UCLA as an Industry Research and Material Transfer Associate within the Technology Development Group drafting and negotiating industry sponsored research agreements, nondisclosure agreements and material transfer agreements.
