What do e-recycling and gorillas have in common?
According to MCPC, an industry-leading endpoint management and sustainability organization, coltan is an ore mined by hand in the Democratic Republic of Congo. That’s because tantalum, one of the elements that can be extracted from coltan, is used to manufacture capacitors for electronic devices, including mobile phones and computers. The mining process leads to deforestation, which threatens gorillas’ natural habitat.
A trusted Ingram Micro partner, MCPC aims to reduce coltan-related environmental impact by recycling or extending the life of electronic devices. Through Ingram Micro’s ITAD and lifecycle program, the company helps customers and channel MSPs protect their brand while responsibly managing or retiring electronics in a curated step-by-step process.
“When we started talking to Ingram Micro, what really caught our eye was the leadership team at the time was extremely open to collaborating with us and configuring a program that met our needs,” said Jason Taylor, chief of staff at MCPC. “This collaboration with Ingram Micro has not only transformed our business operations but has also set a benchmark for industry best practices in e-waste-related managed services.”
Through Ingram Micro’s IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) program, MCPC partnered to create a holistic approach to treat devices at the end of their useful life in corporate environments. Both teams agreed to set benchmarks for tablets, PCs and even medical devices that ensure the devices are sustainably and securely reused, resold or recycled in a financially responsible way.
So what makes a good partnership great?
A common vision, says Taylor. Not to mention flexibility, transparency and customization and working closely to establish a safe and secure network. From 2022 to 2023, there was a 20% increase in data breaches making security a top priority for customers, MSPs and MCPC. By reinforcing MCPC’s commitment to proof of performance in cybersecurity as well as environmental awareness, both MCPC and Ingram Micro share the same values in protecting resources and data making security a top priority for MSPs and MCPC, as well as for Ingram Micro. With personalized and custom-built ITAD solutions, Ingram Micro helps MSPs like MCPC put businesses in touch with the most secure ways to refurbish or recycle electronic devices, reinforcing their commitment to both environmental awareness and proof of performance in cybersecurity.
“Ingram [Micro] has a very well-established global program for IT asset disposition…so if we become too busy at our brick-and-mortar locations, Ingram Micro has overflow capabilities,” said Taylor. “If we have a customer that’s overseas, they ship it to wherever the local facility is…the beauty of that is everyone is using the same pricing, business processes and software resulting in a customer experience with a single pane of glass that delivers a very high accuracy relating to reporting.”
With globally recognized third-party certifications focused on operational activities, sustainable procurement, cybersecurity and more, Ingram Micro and MCPC aim to help usher in an age of action and awareness.
By working with Ingram Micro on a more sustainable e-recycling procurement and process, MCPC helps save the resource equivalent of charging more than five million smartphones, approximately 112,000 barrels of oil and more. Considering that approximately 61 million metric tons of e-waste was generated globally in 2023, MCPC and Ingram Micro share similar goals to protect the environment by supporting environmental initiatives like MCPC’s.
